Back To The Box

It looked like a lazy Sunday afternoon, but looks can be deceptive. I started it by engaging Mrs Mop mode and cleaning the kitchen.

After those exertions, I headed out, down to Islington, in search of The Tinderbox - an "espresso emporium" (their words not mine) that I first wrote about three years ago. It's not difficult to find, unlike parking spaces, which are of a rarity more normally associated with hen's teeth, or polite BMW drivers.

Next to my parking space, an estate agent's sign caught my eye. Fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy should appreciate it:

Three years on, and nothing has changed. I mean, nothing. The promised WiFi access still isn't working, a fact which didn't deter their staff from selling me an access voucher (yes, you have to pay, and pay dearly).

The place was mobbed, however I ended up acquiring a perch (almost literally -the stool was that tall) that enabled me to survey my fellow patrons, like some benevolent emperor. Interestingly, unlike last time, there wasn't a black turtleneck sweater in sight.

Whilst the decor (and let's make special mention of the "decor" on the toilet floor -ick!) hadn't changed a jot, The beautiful espresso machine was still in place

...and its output was, as ever, a thing of beauty (with a hell of a kick)

So what, you might wonder, is the difference between this place and the many great coffee houses of Denver, Colorado? Well for one thing, noise and bustle. This place has the air of an airport departure lounge, only without the charisma. The old leather aeroplane seats are still in place, but beyond that there's little to warm the heart. I remember enthusing about it three years ago, and now I'm wondering why? Maybe it was the novelty of being in a UK coffee house, after so long in the US?

Whatever it was, the legend is no more. I guess that's a bit like watching a long-gone childhood TV program, with your adult perspective. A show you had fond memories of, now just seems cheap and tacky.

But that's OK. London is a big city, and I have many more Sundays to explore its coffee outlets. If any DMfM readers have knowledge of good (independent) coffee houses in and around north London, feel free to email DMfM with information.

Site of the day, if we actually had such a feature, would be JiWire - a worldwide guide to WiFi hotspots.

Life 3.0

Everything is cyclical they say. History repeats itself. And so it is that I begin a new chapter in my life.

After six years in the United States, I have returned to Britain, and am kinda starting over. I came for a vacation, and just never left. If I'm honest, one of the big reasons was money. It was just proving too difficult to make a living in Denver.

Of course I miss Colorado, but only during the hours I'm awake. I miss my friends and loved ones, my dog Miles, my belongings etc., and of course, KUVO.

It may be that I will end up back in the US, but right now, I have to get out of the financial dead-end life that had put me in, and rebuild anew.

And so I find myself living in London for the first time in 15 years, and after an initial feeling of "what have I let myself in for?", I'm now settled into a web development contract, and have a little place to call home.

I'm in a slightly odd accommodation situation, however, it suits me down to the ground. I'm paying way more than planned, but absolutely everything is included in the rent - all bills, plus broadband internet, and Sky satellite tv! In fact, (placing optimist hat squarely on head) I have a kind of 'loft' apartment within a larger apartment. My bit is big enough for a bedroom, office, and lounge, and the beer in the fridge can be reached from the desk (a key feature in any young man-about-town's abode!)

As you can see, I'm reworking the DMfM stylesheet. This is article No.600 and I wanted to do a complete redesign before posting it, however, a month and a half after reworking the stylesheet, I still haven't had time to do the redesign (working long hours during the week), and so I'm just posting this anyway, and will redesign further, when I can.

Thank you to anyone who's reading this. I know one or two DMfM faithful are still monitoring if I'm writing (they've been in touch), and thank you for that.

It's taking its time, but Life 3.0 is under way, and the only way is up.
